**Cunard will enlarge Queen Mary 2’s at-sea kennels in a spring 2027 refit, with a refreshed owners’ lounge and bigger outdoor walking area. It could simplify transatlantic travel for passengers who bring dogs.**

For years, Queen Mary 2 has been the go-to ocean liner for travellers who prefer to take their dogs across the Atlantic rather than fly them. Cunard says its dedicated kennels are the only such facilities at sea. A major refit planned for spring 2027 is set to expand and improve those spaces, making life on board more practical for dogs and their owners.

## What is changing

- The at-sea kennels will be redesigned and expanded.
- The owners’ lounge will be refurbished.
- The outdoor dog-walking area will be enlarged.

Work is scheduled during a dry dock at Damen Shiprepair Brest in France from 31 March to 9 May 2027.

Alongside the pet-focused changes, Cunard plans broader updates: refreshed Grill accommodation and restaurants, 31 new cabins (16 Princess Grill Suites and 15 Britannia staterooms), new luxury retail outlets, expanded outdoor deck space, an upgrade to Mareel Wellness & Beauty and a digital upgrade to Illuminations, the on-board planetarium and cinema.

## Why this matters now

If you prefer to keep your dog with you on a transatlantic crossing, improved kennel facilities and owner areas can make a long voyage more comfortable and less stressful. The timing also gives ample notice to plan future trips. Kennel capacity after the refit has not been disclosed, so early enquiries are sensible, especially as demand may rise once upgrades are publicised.

## Planning a crossing with your dog

- Ask about the practicalities before you book: kennel availability and size limits, costs, daily routines, walk times and when owners can visit.
- Confirm travel rules for your route. Border requirements for animals still apply. Check vaccination, microchipping and documentation for departure and arrival ports.
- Consider accessibility and distance. If mobility is a factor, ask where the kennels are in relation to cabin options, which lifts and routes you would use and whether any of the new cabins will suit your needs.
- Clarify on-board support. If veterinary or additional pet care services matter to you, ask Cunard what will be available after the refit.
- Check the ship’s schedule. The dry dock is planned for 31 March to 9 May 2027, so avoid those dates and confirm any sailing you consider.

## A note on exclusivity

Cunard describes these as the only kennels at sea. That positioning has made Queen Mary 2 the main option for bringing dogs on an ocean crossing. If other lines expand pet-friendly offerings, they are likely to differ from dedicated kennel facilities, so compare details carefully.

## What to watch next

Expect more information on kennel capacity, booking windows and detailed policies closer to 2027\. If a transatlantic crossing with your dog is on your list, register interest early and keep an eye on updates from Cunard as plans are finalised.
